Introducing teams, men: Malta
- This is Malta’s third participation at the ‘big’ Europeans. They are yet to win a game though upon their first try they avoided of being ranked bottom in Belgrade as they beat Turkey in a penalty-shootout after finishing 10-10 in regular time in the game for places 15-16th. However, it went the other way two years ago in Barcelona when they met again but this time the Turks prevailed in the shootout after a 7-7 draw in the regular time.
- Malta’s only appearances at the top level dates back to 1928 and 1936 when they played at the Olympic Games. In Amsterdam, they beat Luxemburg 3:1 but France blew them away 16:0 in the quarters. In Berlin, they lost all their three matches (HUN 0:12, GBR 2:8, YUG 0:7) and were ranked 16th. They played in Group B at the Europeans, in 1981 and 1985, and in Group C in 1987 – also participated regularly in the FINA Development Trophy.
- Malta’s results so far: 12 matches, no win, 2 draws and 10 losses – goals: 68-180.
- In the qualifications, Malta lost to Romania but beat Portugal to secure another showing at the Europeans.
