Group D – Georgia

  • This is Georgia’s fourth appearance on the big stage: they finished 12 th in Budapest 2014 on their debut, then came 14 th in Belgrade 2016 and 13th in Barcelona 2018.
  • Georgia lost their first nine matches at the 2014 and 2016 Europeans before tying a match with the Netherlands in Belgrade though they lost the ensuing penalty shootout. Then they managed to gain their first ever win (12-11) over Turkey. Two years ago they could add two more wins over Turkey and Slovakia in the games for the 13-16th places.
  • Since they became an independent country in 1991, they couldn’t qualify for the other big tournaments.
  • They played 19 matches at the Europeans so far, had 3 wins, 1 tie and 15 losses. Their goal difference is 134-233.
  • Georgia won its group at home in the qualification as they managed to upset Germany and beat Switzerland easily.
